FREEZE-UPS LEAD TO BWA IN UPPER ISLAND COVE, SPANIARDS BAY, NL
A winter storm coupled with high winds swept snow and ice around the water intake of Spaniards Bay leaving around 4,000 people under boil water advisory, on December 31. The town of Upper Island Cove which shares Spaniards Bay's water source was also put under advisory.
Reduced water pressure also caused a malfunction in the chlorination system and residents were experiencing discolored water.
"That's all fixed now," says Upper Island Cove secretary, Dorothy Mercer. "We're sending a set of samples to the lab today and another one tomorrow. All being well, the advisory should be lifted by Wednesday".
"Notices were posted on our town website and sent to the local radio station," she says. "All 1,600 of our residents are affected," she says. "There are more residents in Spaniards Bay since the community of Tilton was amalgamated into the municipality of Spaniards Bay in 1991."
