Advisory of the Day

Update 2015/4/8

YOU CAN NOW DRINK THE WATER AT EAST BAY FISH'N CHIPS TAKE-OUT, NS

Water Today first talked to Dale Leterte of Chippin Dales Famous Fish'N Chips, in May 2014. At the time, he was waiting for a a part to fix his UV system so that the BWA on his take-out could be lifted. Almost a year later the advisory has finally been removed.

"I had to change the machine," he says. "The old one just didn't work. It cost me $400 to $500. I'm happy it's done but it doesn't affect the business much because we don't use tap water for anything, period. We give out plastic forks and knives and sell bottled water".

According to Leterte, he survived Nova Scotia's fierce 2015 winter, but barely. The Take-out closes every winter and he is waiting for more clement weather to re-open. "Right now, the place is closed but the girls are on standby. There's still lots of snow around here. But I'm counting on the weather being good during tourist season"

East Bay is on Bras d'Or Lake on Cape Breton Island, it has one public beach (East Bay Sandbar) and a large number of summer cottages with beach front property. It is located 22 km away from Sydney and is famous for its fish and chips. Based on the 2011 Census, East Bay has a population of 572 which is 33.7% lower than in 2001. In 2011, 10.5% of the population was under the age of 20 and 33.2% was 65 years or older.
