My 5 year old son and I were refused a glass of water A reader brought to our attention that a large Pizza chain in Toronto had refused to give her 5-year old son a glass of water. She wanted to know where to lodge a complaint. Water Today called the City of Toronto to find out more. Richard Mucha , bylaw enforcement answers below.

My 5 year old son and I were refused a glass of water
Just came across your article on restaurants giving non customers drinking water.
I am trying to find out how to log a complain with the government for refusal of water.
My 5 year old son and I were refused a glass of water yesterday (July 14) at name withheld in Toronto. My son was red faced and sweating after having walked from the subway. We had also stopped at a playground on the way. It was around 5pm and 30*C on this sunny day. I repeatedly asked for a glass of water. At first refusal I was told that their water was contaminated, next it was because the pipes were bad in this old building (probably built in the 1960's). I asked what they used to make the pizza dough and Dan said there is no water in dough. Next request; we had to wait 20 minutes for our order to be ready; I was told it was head office policy. I did inform this Dan that it was illegal to refuse anyone life sustaining water and asked for the manager. He told me that the manager was unavailable. We went to the washroom and drank the water from there.

You're on your own

Richard Mucha today responded to a watertoday.ca inquiry regarding viewers request for rules on a glass of water for her child at a Toronto eatery. Mr. Mucha who is the Licensing Bylaw enforcement boss in Toronto proper says that nothing in bylaws states that businesses with licenses are under any official law to give or grant someone a glass of water, however Mr. Mucha said you can't really legislate common sense either. The bylaw enforcement manager said that the enforcement division is careful with private property rights. So dear readers you can't say it's the law to give you a glass of water, in my mind I think the best case here is to tell friends to vote with their wallets and avoid the place.
