What is a watershed? How does everything end up in the ocean? For some great classroom ideas -- Follow the journey of a plastic bottle with these resources:
 Ideas K-3
Gone Fishin’

A Water Learning Activity K-3

Teachers’ Supplies
:
  • A galvanized waterproof washtub (no plastic tubs!)
  • A set of metal numbers (0-9)
  • Toy wooden fishing rods with magnets (etsy.com)
The Lessons
  • Read or listen to a story about water at freestories for kids.
  • Go fishing. Numbers (0-9) will be in the water- filled tub. One at a time children will “fish” with the wooden rod and pick up one number with the magnet at the end of the rod.
  • Each number will correspond to a question about the lesson.<
  • The teacher will ask the question. The child who went fishing will answer. A correct answer gets a prize.
  • Repeat until all questions have been covered.
Prizes: We want to encourage non-plastic alternatives to a healthy lifestyle. The prizes ought to be a teaching aid as well. “Why should we not use plastic?” You can find some great ideas such as bamboo toothbrushes, kids bamboo forks and spoons, non-toxic plastic free glue, kids-sized plastic-free bottles...and much more at lifewithoutplastic.com/kids-and-babies

When fishing season is over – turn your tub into a planter.

 Ideas 7-9
What is a watershed? Where does your drinking water come from? What happens to your wastewater? How does plastic enter the watershed and make its way to the ocean?

  • Order a water testing kit from SafeWater.Org
  • Check out the BWA Maps at WaterToday
  • Create a survey and find out how many people in your neighborhood know the answers to those questions; using those results design posters to place in your community with helpful information and solutions
  • Create a game for kids in K-3 that explains the plastic problem, for example a game of tag where fish have to swim away from a plastic monster; then go to a local daycare or K-3 class and play.
  • Go on a field trip and pick up plastic garbage then take that back to art class and make something awesome
  • Make a video that explains the problem and offer solutions (Check out: thewaterbrothers.ca/education/teachers-guide/)

 Ideas 10-12
Now is a good time to introduce your students to a research paper and interdisciplinary approaches. Take that research and
  • Create a documentary film.
  • Write a movie script and film it.
  • Create a video for kids in grades K-3; 4-6 and take it to the elementary. classes in your area with some activities for the younger kids.
  • Write a children’s book. For that matter write an adult’s book.
  • From classics to rock to pop. Write some music. Perform it. Film it. And by the way WaterToday is on the lookout for some great water music that we can publish on our website.
  • For your tech geeks create some software
  • Create a science project that has a solution

Grade 10-12 Vocational Students

Are You Ready For A Semester Long Mega Project?

The Idea
: Create An Interactive Water Knowledge Living Experience
The Topic: WATER. All and Anything from watersheds, to rivers, streams and oceans. Marine life to aquaculture. All and Anything from flooding to drought. Use and abuse. Algae to invasive species. Pollution and clean-up. One drop at a time and every space in between. You will need to present problems and offer space for solutions. You could cover a water topic per week or per month and keep it going for upcoming students in the next years to add more.
The Team: Your inter-disciplinary and cross-curricula team members will come from the following classes:
  • Graphic Design
  • Building Construction; Electrical; Welding etc.
  • Business
  • Marketing
  • Textiles
  • Child Care
  • Beauty Culture
  • Agriculture
  • Academics
  • Have we forgotten anyone? You add them!

The bare bones rules: The teams’ constructions can be as simple or as sophisticated as your imagination dictates. You must however use at least 90% recycled materials in your construction. Your construction must be an educational experience for any age. Define your audience. Students? Ages? General Public? Create accordingly.

The interactive experience can be a walking tour, booths, a series of pods, park benches or whatever you choose in an enclosed or semi-enclosed space either indoors or outdoors with design features that present information.
  • For example you could construct a “water corner” for a K-3 classroom out of wooden palettes (that you must safety for little kiddies!) The water corner could serve as a reading space for water-related stories and/or an art space.
  • Or you could pull out all the stops and construct a building on school property or a community area. Here you could have presentations, class events, story-telling,concerts, interactives etc.
  • Or everything in between from pods to podcasts, from posters to billboards, from games to game-changers. You are in charge Your purpose is to construct an inviting space geared to your choice audience. Your unique design must be comfortable enough to inspire discussion, interaction, and problem solving.

Obstacles? They are opportunities to find solutions:
Business and marketing students will be in charge of fund raising to pay for costs incurred in the project. Some ideas:
  • You could sell non-plastic water bottles while banning all plastic water bottles on school property.
  • Oh…and you might want to add a school water dispenser to your list of things-to-buy.
  • Beauty culture students could accept donations for haircuts.
  • Agriculture students could sell school grown greenhouse produce.
  • Welding students could make garden furniture and planters for sale
  • You get the drift. Make use of your talents to find a solution.

Got some naysayers? You provide the convincing data. Check out our WaterToday stories for students here
