MALARTIC
Nicolas Paquet’s hard-hitting NFB documentary Malartic is now streaming free of charge across Canada
Malartic examines the fallout from the largest open-pit gold mine in Canada, 10 years after its opening (documented by the filmmaker in 2011’s The Golden Rule). Revealing the broken promises of that megaproject, the film shows the contrast between the town’s decline and the wealth of the mining company. Part anthropological study, part investigation into the corridors of power, Malartic addresses the fundamental issue of sustainable, legal and fair land management.
The film had its world premiere at the Rendez-vous Québec Cinéma and was shown in theatres in several regions of the province in early spring, after winning the Caribou prize at the Festival du cinéma documentaire de Gaspé Vues sur mer, awarded to docs that stand out for their environmental, ecological or regionalist values.
