GOLDEN, BC: CONFLICTING REPORTS ON LIFTING BWN AT LP CANADA, BC

This story is brought to you in part by Seaveyors

Following up on our report from November 24th on the BWN at LP Canada Ltd. of Golden, BC, this reporter has received conflicting information. In October the mill was issued a Do Not Use advisory with reference to a suspected cross connection between glue and the cafeteria/ washroom water systems

The advisory was updated on November 7th by Interior Health from a Do Not Use(DNU) to a Boil Water Notice(BWN), and on November 22nd, an email to Water Today from Karl Hardt, Interior Health Communications Officer stated the DNU and BWN were not related. At that time Interior Health was awaiting final samples for bacteria in the water supply, two previous samples had shown clear. This reporter spoke with Dave Messier of LP Canada Ltd today and he stated "The Boil Water Notice was lifted on November 28th by Interior Health. The lines were flushed and after testing found to be clear." In an email today to this reporter, Juliana Gola at Interior Health stated "I can confirm that they are still operating under a BWN at this time.", which would be in direct conflict with the information given by Messier.

When questioned on why Interior Health would still have a BWN in place Messier stated " I have documentation from Robert Birtles of Interior Health stating we are all clear.". Messier did request that Birtles be contacted directly to confirm this information. This reporter has contacted Robert Birtles by phone and by email, and further requested that Gola of Interior Health confirm this report as well, but have not received a response from either at this time

LP Canada Ltd purchased the plywood/ LVL plant in 1999 from Evans Forestry Products, and employs over 350 people in the community of Golden, BC. The revitalization of the plant from the difficult slump in the 80's and 90's has many in the community viewing the company as a white knight as it is the largest employer. Golden is located in south eastern British Columbia, 713 kms east of Vancouver and 262 west of Calgary. The area is an outdoor tourist attraction with downhill skiing, river rafting, and wildlife viewing.
