Advisory for HAY RIVER (4), Northwest Territories
[Return to Northwest Territories | Return to province list]
HAY RIVER (4)
Type:
Water Quality Advisory
-
Active
Issued: 12/22/2025
Details:
4 WQAs issued November 3.
Drinking Water Advisories issued to four (4) South Slave Communities due to high levels of Trihalomethanes (THMs) which are caused by the reaction of chlorine with naturally occurring organic material in water, such as algae, decaying plants/vegetation and soil runoff. Tests have shown THMs slowly increasing since August 2024. An aging infrastructure and low water levels are attributed to the elevated levels of THMS.
Communities affected are
Town of Hay River,
Hamlet of Enterprise,
Kátł'odeeche First Nation (Catlow D Chafers), and
Ka'a'gee Tu First Nation (Kakiza). -
- UPDATE December 22 Officials have said recent tests show THMs are now below the guideline maximum. However, the annual average must also drop below that level before the all-clear can be issued.
