WATER LEVELS WERE BEGINNING TO RECEDE IN FRASER VALLEY BUT PINEAPPLE EXPRESS HAS ARRIVED
The potent "Pineapple Express" atmospheric is bringing severe rainfall and renewing flood warnings as of Monday, December 15, 2025.
Authorities have warned that the already soaked areas could see rivers rise quickly, increasing the risk of further flooding and landslides.
Current Situation and Forecast
- Water Levels Receding (Initially): Water levels in areas like Abbotsford's Sumas Prairie had started to drop over the weekend, leading to the downgrading or lifting of some evacuation orders and alerts.
- Pineapple Express Arrival: A robust atmospheric river, known as a "Pineapple Express" because it transports tropical moisture from around Hawaii, reached the B.C. coast, with heavy rain expected throughout Monday and Tuesday.
- Intense Rainfall: Environment Canada has issued orange-level rainfall warnings for the west and central Fraser Valley, including Abbotsford and Chilliwack, with up to 80 millimetres of rain expected in lower elevations and potentially over 100 mm in the mountains.
- Exacerbated Risk: The new rain, combined with rising freezing levels and snowmelt, is expected to exacerbate conditions in rivers that are already at or near flood stage, leading to a high likelihood of additional flooding and road closures.
Travel and Safety Information
- Highway Closures: Due to the risk of washouts and debris flows, several major highways have experienced closures or warnings for short-notice closures. As of Monday morning, some stretches of Highway 1, Highway 3, Highway 5, and Highway 99 were affected.
- Evacuation Orders: While some orders were lifted, dozens of properties in the Fraser Valley remain under evacuation order or alert.
- Stay Informed: Residents are urged to monitor local conditions closely and check official sources for the latest updates.
